VICKSBURG, Miss. - Authorities have found at least two unmarked and unidentified graves in the Vicksburg National Cemetery's section for World War II and Korean War veterans, and officials fear there could be dozens more.
National Park Service officials announced the findings during a news conference Thursday at the sprawling cemetery, the final resting place for more than 18,000 veterans. Most of those are Union soldiers from the Civil War.
Officials said the unmarked graves were found in sections of the cemetery opened in 1940s for World War II and Korean War veterans. The cemetery stopped offering burials in 1961, except for veterans with prior arrangements.
The cemetery is at the site one of the Civil War's decisive battles, the siege of Vicksburg.
